If you are choosing your white paint in art shop for the first time, you must know the answer to consultant’s question: zinc white or titanium white. Your choice of white will give you a pleasure of your painting. But it could also be a disappointment.
Let’s see what white is better: zinc white or titanium white.

Zinc white. Choosing or not?

zinc white

Nowadays, there is less need for a zinc white among (amateurs) artists, because an experienced artist knows and skilfully exploits a specific function of zinc white.
The name “zinc white” speaks for itself: zinc oxide is added. This white became very popular in 1840, when a zinc paint was invented, a strong competitor with a zinc white.

Zinc white pros:

  • has a is the coldest white colour, a little shade of blue;
  • low toxicity;
  • resistance to hydrogen sulphide;
  • fastness to a light;

Zinc white cons:

  • tending to cracking of the paint;
  • long dry, it can delay a drying of other paints;
  • low coverage of zinc white.

You can see half coloured small squares on tube, you can read about it in «How can we choose the quality paints for oil painting». I’m not sure that low coverage can be con, therefore, many have shifted from zinc white using and give preference to titanium white.

Titanium white. Choosing or not?

Titanium white is a new story (in comparison with lead white and zinc white). In 1908 USA and Norway suggested white producing from titanium oxide. in the ’20s titanium white has become known. Since then, titanium white had raised its popularity around the world.

Titanium white pros:

  • titanium white coverage holds a leading position among other white pigment;
  • high reflecting characteristics to a light;
  • low toxicity;
  • resistance to hydrogen sulphide;
  • dry faster in contrast to zinc white
  • Titanium white cons:
  • are not well suited for staining technique;
  • titanium dioxide is not engaging with an oil;
  • it can be yellowish with oil over time;

    I would like to tell you about lead white.

Lead white

This is the oldest white (have been made in ancient times). The ancient artists
created their paintings using precisely lead white. At that time, there is nothing better , but! The toxicity of lead white was so high that in 1923 “ White Lead Convention ” was signed with one thing: these restrictions do not apply to painting.
Even now many artists consider them to be the best, but most of them refuse to use it. As I know, their production in the CIS is prohibited. In art stores you can find a foreign lead white , according to the proportion of lead, it is very dosed. Many art shops simply do not buy them, therefore, it’s a problem to find it.

I’d like to summarize all of the above: zinc white and titanium white are both good, they have different properties that can be skillfully used. It is better to choose zinc white for staining technique , titanium white will be good for pastosry technique. Zinc white has a colder shade, but the reflectivity of light is higher in titanium white.
Choosing white paint, that allows you to create your masterpiece nice and easy as possible.
